Shag Ems dilema ....

Hey guys,

just have a couple of questions that I would like to have answered please, obvioulsy I know that u all have loads to do and that Alps isnt till june but nevertheless if u can answer the following questions it would make my life a lot easier!

1, How likely is it that you will be able to take my boat back to Birmingham with you?

2, If u cant take one back, is there by any chance a way u can bring me one?

3, WOt airports are you flying to? I can start looking for flights and more importantly find out if the airlines will allow me 2 take a kayak.

thats about it for know, if anyone has any suggestions I will be more than grateful for your advice!

take care guys

the flight people will most likely be getting is into geneva:

Saturday 14th june arriving in geneva at 13.30

ideally you need to get yourself to that airport at around the same time as them so you can go in the hire car to the campsite.

if impossible you could always get a train to embrun from wherever you can fly into and we can pick you up from embrun.

with regards to the boat....

best case scenario we can fit it in the van (not sure though because we don't have a van yet so don't know size etc etc).

If not...if one of the guys who are flying don't mind flying it back to brum airport then you could do that. would have to arrange for it to be picked up from brum airport though somehow and also we'd need to invest in an inflatable roof rack to get it from campsite to geneva airport.

You could make the mission of getting Shag 'Ems boat back to blighty the prize for winner of Dick of the Tour! (thinking about it, Dick of the Tour might not be the most responsible person) Or you could have the king of all challenges - hitchhike all the way back to Birmingham (from the campsite) with Shag 'Ems boat. How about that one Joe? Hitchhiking home was discussed between Martyn and J-Ro the year Martyn's car had an argument with a concrete barrier on the way to the Alps so it is not a new idea.

You don't need an inflatable roofrack to take one boat to the airport. Ensure that you have the full insurance excess waiver thing and then just strap the boat directly to the roof (maybe with some foam or towel between the boat and the roof) - just remember to remove the boat before dropping the car off!

Hey guys,

cheers for the feedback, not quite sure I fancy having to hitch hike back to Birmingham though!

ok this weekend I will look into flights to Geneva, I will try and get there b4 u stop u from hanging about, if thats not an option then I will look into this train business.

ok, looks like I should be able to buy a boat for the ALps then Smile

instead of andys idea I may as well just buy a roof rack when I get to the alps.

SO next problem, Birmingham airport to Uni. If anyone is willing to help u can expect a big thank you and a lot of paid for booze on one night, would be really grateful for any help, just let me know.

looking forward 2 the alps already kids Smile

take care

what sort of boat are u thinkin of gettin? long or short? cus if short it could easily b taken on the train bak to uni or something! xx
Tim

If the boat will fit in a Nissan Almera (the size of a VW Golf), I could probably be persuaded to drive to the airport and back from Uni, if you'll pick up the airport parking charge.

In other news. Forest 0 Swansea 0. Was a good match mate, your boys played well!

yeh heard m8, heres hoping us 2 make it to the championship next year. gd plan about the parking, if u could let me know how much it will cost if it isnt redicuously exspensive then I will be more than happy to pay.

Im thinking about getting a Liquid Logic Hoss

but not 100% sure, will have to wait and see! Tim check out the measurements, is taht gonna be 2 big?
stepheneagles

alternatively depending on when we rock up on sunday with the van we may be able to swing round the airport. that could mean you waiting around tho cos we won't know what time we'll be back in brum

I think andys plan is best personally.
stepheneagles

also...we might purchase a club inflatable roof rack so then you'd be sorted. anyone know where to pick em up cheap (andy?)

Steve,

I would have thought that the best place to get hold of an inflatable roof rack is direct from their website - HandiRack UK. You have to be careful that the roof is spotless before putting it on the roof as even the smallest grains of dirt will cause obvious scratching to the roof. One way around this is to place a towel (or similar) between the roof and the rack -> not sure how effective this would be though.

Why would the club be getting one?

Alright mate, I'll measure up my cargo area tomorrow.

Quote was about £30 for normal parking (excluding 'surf boards'), but I reckon we could get that and I could just pick you up from the normal pickup place.

Just make sure you tell our airline that you're taking a 'surf board' along. Dunno if you'll need to put it in a boat bag so it magically becomes luggage... Andy? Wink

With regards to Swansea. I was very impressed with the dedication of your crowd. Still loving and loud right to the end, unlike Forest's hasher crowd :\ Hopefully next year we'll both be in the Championship, and I can mock you when we beat you.
Claire

Sion, I think Andys plan is not to buy a roof rack put ur boat on the roof using a towel as cushioning and get ur boat back on the plane.
You can hitchhike back tho lol is your placement finished by the end of june??

You would be surprised how easy it is to fit big boats in small cars, with a little practice. I used to get my 7'4" creeker into my old Renault Clio without any issues - fold back the front passenger seat and slide the boat in from the boot into the passenger footwell.

You don't need to put it into a boat bag, but it is adviseable to wrap the boat up in something - eg bubble wrap or plastic wrapping - just to protect it from further damage. Easyjet have a policy where you pay £15 per flight (if paid in advance) for an item of sporting equipment.

Hope this helps

I just threw my boat on the plane when I went to france. no problemo. you can't pre-book (or you couldn't when u fly anyway). you basically rock up right when check in opens and its fine. no weight limit either so you can pack it with stuff if you like.

those inflatable roofracks are 50 quid on that website + delivery or you can get em for 50 quid inc delivery on ebay.

its just a thought as something that may be useful for the club being as we have a bit of grant to play with. and needing extra cars for trips I.e. devon we are limited to those with roof racks at moment.
stepheneagles

yeah I meant the you hitch hiking idea shags Wink xxxx
Andy

Following the despicable display from the Welsh rugby team last Saturday, I am more than ever up for Shag 'Em having to hitch back from the Alps!!

Andy
stepheneagles

seconded!!!

and we just found out that there will be no room to transport your boat around during the holiday so afraid your going to have to carry it sionny Wink

bloody welsh!!!!
Siôn

due to a such a dismal performance of rugby I think u should bear the weight of my kayak back 2 germany 2 even think u could contecnd with my far superior country! and btw GET RID OF THIS FUCKING ROSE!!!!!
stepheneagles

unfortunately sion - its your rose and only you have the power to get rid of it...all you have to do now is to work out how Wink
