Are we getting more susceptible to river diseases now were getting older??? Or is the water quality getting worse?
I felt crap after the last time I made it to Hurley (a long time ago I know). Now Chris after Boulters...Though I would probably blame the warmed milk as I was OK this time.

Dave,
Ed also seems to suffer whenever there is a whiff of a possibility of someone mentioning the word 'ill' from a river, so I think that it is an age thing.

As you close in on the OAP years your body's immune system drops when compared to that of one of us young students so I'd go for the old age.... _________________ Bite the hand that feeds, Tap the vein that bleeds.... |

I refuse to accept that age has anything what so ever to do with being more susceptable to river diseases.
It is a well known phenomenon that Trent Belly has exisited since time began. Even the early exploeres of HPP say to drink coke when you go there as to stem any bug from developing in the darkest depths of your guts.
I think there is a 100% correlation from paddling CERTAIN rivers and becoming ill. I.e. HPP (been ill everytime I have been there) I mean there is a power station just up stream from HPP. I am surprised there arent any three eyed fish swimming by!
However I think I can safely say I have never been ill from paddling any other river or course. Even the Nene hasn't posed a problem for me...and you should see the course when they switch the pumps off. It is briming with sludge. Its absolutely minging!! But still, the water quality seems to be okay.
I dont think its an age thing at all as there is nothing more funnier that a paniced freshers trying to find some coke to drink before getting on a river...then moaning two days later that the coke thang has had no effect on their well being as they have been yaking their guts up.
In summary I think as we get older we should become wiser to where not to paddle because the sh*t will quite litrally hit the fan! _________________ The Sco

I think it all depends how often you go paddling at a certain place. take HPP for example. the first time I went this year I was ill afterwards, but I went several times afterwards and didnt have a problem because I was imune.
I think there may also be a correlation between those who swim regularly in dirty man made play spots and getting sicker than child porn. |

Cheers guys... I now feel enlightened.
The moral of the story is 1) I should really stop swimming so much and 2) keep my mouth shut when I'm under! _________________ <== If you screw your eyes up it kind of looks like a cow!??!!

I'd be supprised if you could get ill from the Thames, it's usually lovely and clean. _________________ http://exastoncc.blogspot.com |

It has really bunged my nose up though... it's struggle to breath today.
But as expected I feel fine
Chris...I think warm dairy products may be the culprit! _________________ <== If you screw your eyes up it kind of looks like a cow!??!!

As I consider myself an expert on being old, let me clarify as it's a Karma thing you see.....
.....you are usually ill after being on a river if you have paddled like a Nancy. It is merely the river Gods way of showing you that they are not amused (hence I have not been actively sick from canoeing for 10yrs now).
The alternative view is avoid HPP and you're generally OK (nb: the last time I was sick from paddling was the last time I went to HPP - 10yrs ago).
