BUSA WHITE WATER RACE 2006
Birmingham University Kayak Club has a long enjoyed the privilege of hosting the BUSA White water race championships weekend and this year will be no different. This event draws hundreds of competitors from across the country to take part in various races:
~ Men's K1
~ Women's K1
~ C1
~ C2
~ Men's Team
~ Women's Team
~ Mixed Team
~ Duo Class (Non BUSA)
~ Open Class (Non BUSA)
This is not a 'hardcore' river (more info a http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/washburn.htm ) and safety cover is provided on the harder bits of the river to fish out all those inevitable swimmers. This weekend is definitely suitable for clubs to bring their freshers along to (for their experience and our amusement!)*, whilst your more experienced paddlers can challenge themselves in white water racers!
*N.B Universities may provide safety boaters to paddle down the course alongside anyone who is not confident enough to paddle alone on the river)
This year's event is to be held on 11th-12th November at the River Washburn, North Yorkshire (same venue as last year)
The only major change this year is that we have moved to a closer (and more practical) campsite. It is situated directly next to the river with easy access to the footpath running alongside the river, (about a 10 minute walk to the safety tent next to the 'weir like fall', and a further 5 minutes to race control)
Like last year, we promise more drunken fun and frolics. There will be a HEATED marquee (with cheap bar) for people to gather in on arrival on the Friday night, and a PARTY on the Saturday. This year's theme is going to be 'Sailors, Pirates, and Mermaids ', keeping it all water related!
There will also be onsite caterers providing all sorts of grub.
It'd be great to see all the usual entrants back again, and we'd also love to see some new clubs entering for 2006. Clubs who aren't BUSA affiliated can still enter the open event and duo event!
We will send an email to your club captain with further details concerning the race - entry deadlines, prices etc. around the start of term.
If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact us.
Hope to see you all at the race!

so...are you guys going to go to this??? I think you should. sounds very teifi esk to me. also if you guys are going then there is also the teeny tiny chance that we could find a cheap flight from nice and get back there.
anyways - the forums been pretty quiet over the summer - make sure you get the freshers on it when uni starts again. need some light entertainment when you are sat in front of a computer 9-5.30 every day. seriously how do people do it!!!
we met some fellow paddlers out here yesterday and so will hopefully be joining a proper club soon - meaning we can get on more rivers (not just the sunshine run). apparently there is quite a lot of rivers around here without going a far as the alps -the only prob is there is no water - so we are praying for rain now!!!
hope alls well back in england - and hopefully cya all soon |

As far as I am aware, all sports clubs at Aston are BUSA affiliated. To find out for sure, speak to Mandy or Gill in the AU office.

right,
I have emailed the brum guys about price and stuff but I think this is something we should do anyway.
I have also looked into going to the safety siminar at PyB at the begining of oct depending on fiunding from the guildas I dont really fancy paying 55 quid to sit in a classroom for most of the weekend. if mandy says yes then a couple of us can go up there. |

all sounds pretty good. I'm gonna check out cheap flights just in case. although I'm guessing if u have a fair number of freshers then there won't be enough boats for us unless we bought our own back which would be a right royal pain in the ass?????!!???
on a separate note...we have rain here at last (much to everyone elses annoyance). which means we may be pioneering a few rivers round here soon...failing that we may well be paddling in the alps this weekend (gyronde, l'argentiere, racecourse are possibilitites!!!)
hope everyone is well - have an awesome freshers week

Steve I have to say you are one lucky lucky lucky bar steward being stuck in France right next to the alps... I dont know, some people have all the fun. Might have to make a cheeky visit in the near future for a paddle to help surpress my yerning for the alps and cheap fizzy french lager!
Take it easy mate

ed - definitely - between me and amy we have got plenty of space here so anyone is more than welcome to come out. paddling this weekend was awesome - pioneered 2 runs for the club (the verube - near nice so bit far from the alps) and the bit of the ubaye above the get in for la fresqe which was fun. also managed a run down the racecourse which was great fun as always. the reports are in the making and we'll get both of them up on the t'internet asap.
hope alls well in england and hopefully cya soon |

Hiya,
The BUSA thing does sound good, I've never done the Washburn but it is one that my sis always raved about, a fast furious river if I remember right (dam released thing).
You'll have to keep us informed about the plans for the term - are we still on for the 30th? We will try to make it up but it might just be for the day as we are hoping that the house will complete next friday so we might have a house move on our hands next weekend!
Looking forward to seeing you all soonski! Ems xxx |

Steve n I are off for a quick run of the Vesubie again this afternoon ("Verube" - dunno quite what stevo was chattin about there!!) and then partying hard tonight chez steve. All of you proper grown-up 9-5 workers, I have found a new respect for you since I've started this full time working malarky, you reeeaaaallly learn to appreciate the weekends don't ya?! Goddamnit, I tried sooo hard to get a lie in this morning, stayin out drinkin on the beach until 2am ... but no, 7am and I'm bolt upright and wide awake!! I feel some old-man style afternoon nappage coming on..!
Back on a uni/paddling note - enjoy freshers week all you guys at uni and hunt us down some fine new recruits... and then bring 'em out here for a piss up wkend!! Hehe - once you get some trip dates sorted plz let us know just incase Steve n I can get back to lovely sunny Wales/Devon for a bit of moist action.
Have had to change my damn username and sign up again to post this - juicybeaver is no more Gotta dash now ... loadsa love to everyone, miss you all and see yas when you come to visit (if anyone fancies New Year in the south of France tickets are fairly cheap at the mo, we may even be able to organise you transfers to and from the airport if cleopatra the taxi/paddle wagon is feelin up to it!)

Hey guys how's everyone? it's been aaaages since I've been on here so thought I'd post something. why's no one been posting all summer???
Ame and Steve, I may take you up on your offer of a weekend in Nice sometime soon- need a break from the delights of Didcot!
Jro, when's the first club trip? I don't have my own boat (yet) cos I've been a tad lazy about going to get one but would be up for doing something when term starts. The race thing sounds good too- how many races are there a day if they cost £12.50 each?? could be quite pricey. hope everyone's enjoyed the summer and are ready for placements etc. Ame, I totally agree about appreciating the weekends, plus having to arrange when you want a day off weeks in advance! crazy!
Anyway, take care everyone. Cant wait to see all you guys!

first club trip is yet to be decided. depends a lot on what type of freshers we end up with. I need to speak to the lads and sort everything out.
would anyone be up for a paddle on saturday? HPP is probably easiest but I feel rough enough as it is, not sure I really wanna get ill again. |

hi just making a tiny suggestion: could your Athletics Union pay for your BUSA entries? It's what Birmingham do and I'm pretty sure that most other unis do too. It makes it a whole lot cheeper for you guys!
